17 THE WORD
Award-winning northern Colorado poet, E.A.
(Beth) Lechleitner, is the third Poet Laureate
for Loveland. The Loveland Poet Laureate
Program is an all-volunteer 501c3 nonprofit
organization dedicated to promoting poetry
as a vehicle to enrich the lives of people in
Loveland and beyond. They advocate for
literacy, literature, and the reading, writing,
and sharing of poetry.
Lechleitner, a long-time resident of Loveland now living in rural
Larimer County, will serve as Poet Laureate from 2025 to 2027.
She has an M.A. from C.S.U. in Business Communications. Her
2019 book, Catchments, was awarded the Fledge Chapbook
Prize from Middle Creek Publishing.
The Laureate Program offers workshops, author readings, outreach
to students, and public access to poetry. Poetry, more than any
other type of writing, reaches both the head and the heart and
is essential to a healthy society!

As advocates of literacy, literature and poetry, we
believe in the power of poetry to enrich, uplift,
and express the lives of our diverse community.
Many panic when confronted with the spelling of it: Laureate.
Always a phonetic or mnemonic to remember:
Related to laurel.
Laur-e-at the dais.
Or is it lariat: that which Will Rogers spun to an art, rope
and words.
A laureate does strive to lasso
Words by their hocks, pull them in, arrange them so they
make sense—
Or nonsense: strings of words to crack open the world.
A laureate is a fool of words, standing with the court jesters,
Among the minstrels, the versifier in the retinue of kings, councils.
Although in the tradition of the moniker, this laureate will
eschew invectives
In favor of praise and awe.
So appointed, I step into this ring of fragrant bay,
Embrace the honor and raise the staff.
